Kampong Charm at newly opened Orange Valley (Sims Avenue)
17 November 2015
“A kampong in a nursing home”, and “a nursing home in a kampong”. This is the unique charm of Orange Valley’s newest nursing home.
Officially opened today by Senior Minister of State for Health & the Environment & Water Resources, Dr Amy Khor, Orange Valley (Sims Avenue) is the Orange Valley’s sixth nursing home in Singapore.
On the concept behind the new nursing home, CEO Dr Khoo Chow Huat explained: “As most of the residents we serve are from the Pioneer Generation who grew up in kampongs, we thought it would be great if we could recreate that kampong ambience for them”.
With that in mind, and inspired by the Eden concept of care, the team created a Garden@Sims filled with many different types of plants such as sunflower, papaya, long bean, lemon grass, and much more. The garden is cared for by both the staff and some resident-volunteers, and the fruits and vegetables harvested from the garden are occasionally used as ingredients for the residents’ meals.
Amidst the lush greenery are also many animal ‘residents’ such as rabbits, birds, fish and terrapins. These animals play an important role in pet therapy, helping to improve residents’ social, cognitive and emotional states. The opportunity to interact with these animals helps improve a general sense of well-being and boosts their self-esteem.
“We set out to create an environment within the nursing home where we can imagine ourselves staying in. Having a rustic environment with pets and plants provides comfort to the mind, body and soul of the elderly. It is spiritually uplifting and definitely provides a better quality of life in the aging years of an elderly person,” said COO and Group Director of Nursing Ms Edel Yip.
The home also houses a mini playground where the grandchildren of elderly residents can run around, and provide a place for the young and old to bond.
Besides the nurturing environment, Orange Valley also introduced various other new initiatives at the Sims Avenue home, including mind-body activities such as gardening, daily outdoor exercise and mah-jong. Once a fortnight, residents are also accompanied by care staff for visits to nearby coffee-shops for meals, to keep them connected with the community.
