A Guide To Nursing Home Costs & Subsidies In Singapore

Elderly Nursing Home

The decision to send your loved one to a nursing home is not an easy one to make. Being separated from them and dealing with other individuals taking care of them can be heart-wrenching.

However, providing day-to-day care for your frail elderly loved one is challenging, especially if you have a full-time job and a family of your own to look after. That is why many Singaporeans seek the aid of an elderly nursing home to care for their family members to ensure their loved one receives the proper care, support, and assistance that they need to improve their quality of life.

Naturally, while researching the ideal nursing home, the question of how much it costs will inevitably surface, as well as whether subsidies are available to offset the expense. To address these pertinent queries, we have compiled a handy guide to shed light on the details.

How Much Does A Nursing Home In Singapore Cost?

A Nursing Home In Singapore

Nursing homes in Singapore provide a higher level of care services and offer more extensive facilities for senior care. As such, the cost of sending your loved one to a nursing home is usually more expensive than other types of old folks’ homes, such as assisted living, independent living, and day care.

Generally, the average nursing home cost in Singapore can range from S$2,000 to S$3,600 monthly. However, families with seniors who require a higher level of skilled nursing care, like those with terminal diseases, can expect to fork out a higher sum. The rates can also vary depending on the level of care necessary and the accommodation chosen.

Of course, shelling out thousands of dollars monthly for elderly care expenses can be a tough ask for most families in Singapore. Fortunately, nursing home subsidies are available to help Singaporeans and Singapore permanent residents offset the costs.

Contrary to popular belief, these reliefs are not limited to just government nursing homes or those operated by Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs). Some accredited private facilities, including Orange Valley Nursing Homes, also qualify for the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) portable subsidy plan.

How To Qualify For A Nursing Home Subsidy?

To qualify for a nursing home subsidy, your loved one must be a Singapore Citizen or a Permanent Resident currently receiving care from an MOH-funded service provider. Your family will also need to undergo means-testing to determine the subsidy amount you are eligible for. Those from lower-income households are granted higher relief under this framework.

With effect from 1 July 2012, this means-test approach is based on Household Means-Testing, which takes into account:

Either:

  • Gross income of the person needing care, their spouse, and all family members living in the same household; and
  • Total number of family members living in the same household

Or:

  • The annual value of the place of residence for households with no income

If you are unsure and need assistance applying for government subsidies, rest assured that medical social workers or administrative staff of the relevant hospitals and long-term care facilities as well as Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) can help you with the application.
